A Tuna Christmas at Cite des Arts

Okay, I definitely have a selfish reason for posting this one.  My husband is performing in, directing, and producing A Tuna Christmas, a play, and it looks like I will be running the lights and sound.  (I haven't done this in years.  This is actually how my husband and I met.)  The show will run Thanksgiving weekend at Cité des Arts, Nov 21-25.  If you are in town you really have to check this one out.  It is hilarious.

Looking for great entertainment for your whole family next weekend? Shane Guilbeau and Kyle Bourque will jazz up the Thanksgiving weekend with a comedy that will be sure-fire hilarity for families in Acadiana. A Tuna Christmas" by Williams and Sears, has become a holiday favorite for 30 years, and once you experience it, you understand why.

It's holiday time in tiny Tuna, Texas, and the town is all astir with local gossip, national news be damned. The phantom has struck again, meddling with yard decorations and causing the live sheep in a manger scene to disappear.

In some ways, A Tuna Christmas is more like a vaudeville act or a revue than a normal performance. Characters drift in and out of the show, and each scene is its own new plot. There's never a real beginning or end so that from a distance the play seems like a series of vignettes. There are moments, though, of utter sincerity among the laughs that ground the show firmly in reality. There's a beautiful scene in the second act where Petey Fisk, the local animal activist, who is sitting with his iguana and a half-coyote, looks up to the stars and delivers a beautiful telling of the story of Jesus in the manger. This story is lightened with references to Vera Carp's angry sheep, and shows reflection and introspection. It is a moment that encapsulates the humanity of the people onstage. No matter how crazy A Tuna Christmas gets, it always does so with a complete sincerity and devotion to its characters' lives.

A Tuna Christmas Nov. 21-24 7:30pm, and Sunday, Nov. 25th 2:00pm tickets are $15.00, and can be purchased at www.citedesarts.org, or make reservations by calling 337-291-1122.
