Here is the 2nd post in my series of Vinegar uses. Like I said yesterday, I plan on doing a few post on the many uses of vinegar, and then on other common household items. Today we are going to learn about vinegar uses for your garden.
- Beautiful Azaleas and Gardenias I live in Louisiana, and believe me Cajuns love their azaleas. I really love gardenias. Now, I've learned one of the secrets to beautiful azaleas and gardenias. Just water your azaleas every once in awhile with a mixture of 2tbsp vinegar to a quart of water.
- Kill weeds. Spray some vinegar (full strength) on weeds.
- Get rid of grass and weeds on or along sidewalks and/or driveways. Spray vinegar (full strength) on the grass and weeds.
- Clean your hummingbird feeder. Clean your feeders in equal parts apple cider vinegar and hot water. Make sure you rinse them well, and let them dry outside in the sunlight. You can fill them once they are dry. The vinegar will help get rid of the sticky residue.
- Get rid of mealybugs. You can use this for indoor or outdoor plants. Just wipe the leaves with bugs with a little bit of vinegar. You could also use a cotton swab dipped in vinegar to kill the bugs and eggs.
- Take care of yellow leaves on your plants. If the leaves on your plants (acid loving plants like gardenias, hydrangeas, and azaleas) water with 2tbsp apple cider vinegar in a quart of water.
- Clean your lawn mower blades. Periodically clean your lawn mower blades (and before you put it up before the winter). Wipe down the blades with a rag dipped in some vinegar.
- Seed starter. You can speed up the germination of seeds. With most woody seeds, they will do better when they are lightly sanded and then soaked overnight in 1/2 c apple cider vinegar and 1 pint warm water. Rinse them and then plant them. You can also use the vinegar solution for herb and vegetable seeds. Just don't use the sandpaper on them.
- Freshen cut flowers and prolong their life by using 2 tbsp vinegar, and 3 tbsp of sugar to a quart of warm water.
