I am really excited about this review, but not as excited as my husband was when we got it. It is amazing how just the small things can cause so much excitement in my house.
I got the opportunity to review a netTALK Duo WiFi. As most of you may know, we got rid of our home phone over a year ago to try to cut our bills. We never used our home phone really. Usually, the only ones that called it were telemarketers. Everyone that really knew us would call our cell phone.
The only thing that ever really bothered me was not having 911 service. You know where it automatically brings up our address in the 911 system. It bothered me because you never know what might happen, and when you might need help and can't talk.
Of course, the other thing that drove me crazy about not having a home phone has to do with my hubby. He constantly leaves his phone in the car or has the ringer off or something. Then I can't get a hold of him when I need to. Now, I can call the home phone and reach him (if he is home).
In addition, I will be able to use printer again as a fax. Yippee.
Anyway, when we got the netTalk Duo, my husband couldn't wait to hook it up and see if it would actually work. I was busy trying to finish making a Christmas present, among other things. I told him he would have to wait. He is not the best with electronics or computer.
I finally pulled it out, and was a little worried because I did not want to spend a lot of time on some complicated gadget.. Well, I was shocked. It was so easy and so fast. It literally only took me minutes to set it up. Thankfully, I had already gone hunting for our old cordless phone and charged it. I am so glad I didn't throw it away.
Now came the true test - would it work? Yes, it did. It works great!! My husband then started calling everyone to tell them. He was like a little kid with a new toy. He couldn't wait to spread the word. My mom stopped by the next day. The hubby couldn't wait to show her by calling her. She was in the same room. What a goof ball. Of course, now I think she might get one, too.
All you need is internet service, an outlet, and a phone. When you get it, you will have to set it up through their website. You will need to enter your information for 911 service. This is mandatory but for me it is a blessing. Then you will be able to pick your own phone number. You can actually get a number for anywhere.
The only thing that I didn't really like was that there weren't any local numbers in my area. It really doesn't matter because no one is charged long distance when they use a cell phone to call us. Then you finish up registering, and plug the netTalk into the internet or your computer with the WiFi and your phone cord into the netTalk. Voila, you are ready to go. Easy peasy.
The service isn't free. It costs a whooping $30 a year!! That is cheaper than one month with your local phone company. You get caller id and free long distance. There are international calling plans, too, if you want. I mean really how much are you paying now? This could save you over $500 or more a year. For me, it gives me peace of mind. Thirty dollars is so worth that peace of mind.
