Prescription costs are outrageous. If you have a chronic condition, like my husband and I, it can cost you 100's of dollars each month just for your medications. Most people think that you are just stuck paying these prices, but there are ways to save on your meds.
First be proactive and ask your doctor for samples. Drug reps give doctors all kinds of samples to get them to prescribe their medicine. So, ask your doctor!! If he doesn't have samples, ask him/her if he/she can get some or has samples of something similar that you can take instead.
If the doctor does not have any samples or can't get any, ask him to prescribe something that has a generic. Generic prescriptions can cost 80% less than the name brand. That is a huge savings. Not all stores may carry the generic. You can always check medtipster.com to see if there are generics available for your prescription in your area.
As for pharmacies, call around. Yes, different stores have different prices. You might even find that you can get a some kind of incentive if you move your prescriptions to another store.
If you are still having problems paying for your medications, you can check with the drug company that makes the prescription. Some of these companies have prescription help. They might be able to send you a card to where you only have to pay $5, $10, ect. for your medicine. They also might have some kind of coupon or rebate available, or might be able to pay for the medication.
You can also check with local organizations or hospitals in your area, and see if they have any prescription assistance programs. I know that a local in my area, Our Lady of Lourdes, has a prescription assistance program.
Just remember that it doesn't hurt to ask!! What can they say? No, but they might also say yes.
