As you probably know, I love Chicken Soup for the Soul books.  They are always full of such wonderful, inspirational stories and devotions.  They always fill me with hope and joy.  Well, this next book that I am reviewing, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Stay at Home Moms: 101 Inspirational Stories for Mother's about Hard Work and Happy Families by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and Wendy Walker, doesn't disappoint either.

The decision to become a stay at home mom may be a decision of necessity, one of no choice, one of compromise, or one of choice.  There are so many reasons that moms (and now some dads) become stay at home moms.  This book brings wonderful stories to life.  Stories that make us realize it is so worth becoming a stay at home mom.  There are so many benefits for everyone.

Moms (and dads) need to know that they are still someone besides a parent and that even in difficult times when we are feeling overwhelmed and unappreciated that it is worth it.  We need to enjoy and nurture our children before they are grown and gone.

By no means, does this mean that we can't have an outside life or go back to work at some point.  However, I have always felt that it is the parents job to parent their children not a full time nanny or babysitter.  Ok, I will get off of my soap box.  After teaching for a few years, I saw too many children that had parents that were too busy for their own children, and blamed teachers and others when they misbehaved.

Anyway, this book has so many great stories about making the decision to stay at home, living with that decision (which isn't always easy), going back to work, working from home, the benefits (for everyone involved), finding out that you did your job right when your children become self sufficient, and looking back at all of the wonderful memories.  You just don't know how this book might inspire you or someone else.

All stay at home moms have those times where they wonder if they are just the mom and if it is worth all of the struggles, and people looking down on you.  If you say you don't have these times, you are just lying to yourself.  People will look at you like or say to you "you can do this, you stay at home and don't do anything".  Please!!!  Most people couldn't handle staying at home with the kids for even a week.

I was lucky because although I didn't get to stay home the whole time my children were home (still have one left), I did get to spend quite a bit at home.  The best compliment I ever got was when my daughter thanked me for making her follow rules and for making her work to earn money to pay for the things she wanted.  When she graduated from college, she said that none of her friends knew how to do anything for themselves.  Their parents had paid for everything they ever wanted (BIG NO-NO!!).  They just couldn't believe how hard it was and what it was like to struggle.

There are so many great stories.  You can search the book to find just the right story for your mood or read it from beginning to end.  Here are the section headings:
  1. Decisions, Decisions
  2. The Daily Grind
  3. Outside the Box
  4. Becoming a Specialist
  5. Working from Home
  6. Ladies Who Launch
  7. Gender Benders
  8. The Dividends
  9. Pink Slips
  10. Looking Back
