Tuesday's Thrifty Tip: Electricity

How do you save money on your electric bill?  There are so many ways to save money on your electric bill.  Let me start with your laundry.

First, wash your clothes in cold water.  For the most part, it doesn't make any difference on how clean an item will get.  The only thing I wouldn't wash in cold water is cloth diapers.  You can save several dollars a month by changing the temperature you wash your clothes in.  It will depend on how many loads you do.

Next, dry your clothes on a clothesline.  This will make a huge difference.  I very seldom dry clothes in my dryer.  Usually, the only time I do is when it rains for several days in a row.  I will put towels in the dryer for about 10 minutes before I hang them.  This will allow them to soften up, and they won't feel like cardboard.  I hate stiff and hard towels.

Finally, only wash full loads.  By doing several small loads, this could double your electric usage.  It drives me crazy when the kids try to wash just a couple of items instead of a full load.

By making these small changes, you can save at least $10 a month on your electric bill.   know when I made these changes, I started saving about $15-$20 a month.  Of course, I used to do a minimum of 10 loads of laundry a week.

  1. I'm an avid clothesline user and it really helped to lower our electric bill. I also found that tumbling with no heat works to soften up clothes, and it really only takes a few minutes. And yes, wash those clothes in cold water!

We are hoping to get an indoor drying rack this year for cold months and rainy days.
