Sorry - No Posts

Hey, guys.  I just wanted to apologize for not posting anything the past few days.  I got a call Wednesday morning from my daughter.  Her dorm room caught on fire and she lost almost everything.  Thankfully, she was not there when it happened.  It started at an outlet by her bed.  Needless to say, she was devastated.  She goes to school about 4 hours away.  I spent most of the day trying to keep her calm over the phone.  Her room was the only one that had fire and smoke damage.  Six other rooms had water damage.  The other rooms just got water on the floor.  Luckily, those girls did not lose much.

Thankfully,  we have been blessed with wonderful friends and family.  By Thursday morning, I had a car full of clothes, bedding, towels, and loads of other items.  When I got to school Thursday afternoon, the school had moved her into a new room, and bought her some toiletries and other items.  I met with student life.  They were very supportive and offered help.  Then we went to maintenance.  The men there are wonderful.  Not only did they put the fire out immediately after it started but they also took up a collection for Alexis.  They made sure to tell me that it was not her fault.  It was an electrical problem.  One of the tv stations called to see if they could help.

Alexis and I unloaded my car then we went to her office.  Her office had collected items for her.  One woman at the office had even contacted a few people to get her a computer.  Her boss and coworker helped load the car.  As Alexis told me, this was a blessing in disguise.  She knows that she has many people who love her and stand behind her.

We spent the next few hours unloading the car, and putting her room together.  We went through a few things in her old room to see if they could be salvaged.  I was exhausted.  We took a break at about 8 to get dinner.  We ate at this place called Sal & Mookie's.  It was delicious.  They had some of the best pizza I've eaten in awhile.  Then it was off to Target to get some more necessities (and a couple of goodies).  When we got back to the dorm, it was time to unload again.  I am so glad her dorm has an elevator.

I have to say, although this was devastating at first, we both feel blessed.  So many people have come forward to help.  I am eternally grateful that she was not there.  If this had happened in the middle of the night, she could have been burned or we could have lost her.  I have to say thanks to our church, our family, our friends, her office, student life, maintenance, and all of the others who have prayed for us and given so much.

The only thing that disappoints me is that the school claims no responsibility.  They stated that she should have had renter's insurance.  We just never thought about having it for a dorm. Like I said though, many people at her school have come forward to help.  If you have a child that lives in a dorm, you might want to get renter's insurance and check all of the outlets.  (Alexis had checked the outlet.  Unfortunately, she did not report that it didn't work.)

Anyway, I will try to get some more freebies and deals posted tomorrow.  I might be going back Saturday.  If I do, there will be another break in the posts.  Take time to hug your children.  Take the time to tell your family you love them.  May God be with you and your family.

  1. I did report that it didn't work - before school even started...
